ASFA’s purpose is to encourage and help develop amateur artistic talent, to support the efforts and needs of working artists, to educate the public, and to connect with and encourage publishers, patrons of the arts and anyone interested in works of the genre. We have created the Emerging Artist Program to encourage students to display their art at regional conventions and give them recognition for their work.

The Emerging Artist Program is an award that is available to art show directors to give to students enrolled in high school or college who are interested in Science Fiction and Fantasy art. At the same time getting a younger generation involved in displaying at conventions.

We have 5 awards to give out yearly. The artist that receives the award will receive $50 from ASFA, a $50 gift certificate to Dick Blick for art supplies, a year’s ASFA membership, and a feature in the ASFA newsletter. The convention needs to apply to ASFA and we will serve as the sponsor for the award.

Guidelines

All students currently enrolled in high schools, undergraduate programs at universities or colleges, and other art courses & programs are welcome to submit their work for awards offered under the Emerging Artists Program. As a convention offering an award, you can decide whether you would like to set attendance at the convention as a requirement for submission. Some conventions waive attendance fees for participating artists, but that is also up to the convention.

We do ask that the art be related to the science fiction, fantasy, and/or speculative genre.

To participate in the program and offer an award:

  • Fill out the Google form. Once we approve your request we will provide you with a logo to put on your website and any promotional materials you create. We strongly suggest that you create a flier for local schools and art programs to help promote your convention.
  • We can also provide a small convention kit that includes a template for a placard to put on the student art panels, a certificate template for the award itself, ASFA ribbons for the art show, as well as business cards with more information about ASFA.
